How The Snakes Got Their Tongues

This term years 3/4 are studying aboriginal culture. the year fours all made dream time stories of their own. This is my story. ‘These days snakes have forked tongues’ and i thought it would be a great idea to make a story about how the snakes got their forked tongues. So I’ve made it so they have the same tongues as we have until…
Three children were making little building out of sticks. The oldest one was Fregoma, the cheekiest was Lendora, and the smallest was Rontelo. They lived in the bush near a waterhole. The water was clear
blue and many animals came to have a drink from it.
They lived in a beautiful place with many tall trees and plants. The children lived with three elders. The oldest and wisest elder was the mighty Batinaghoa. Next to the mighty Batinaghoa was Gladii, the most vicious of them all. Then comes Fentali, the smallest and nicest one. He gave the children lots of Witchetty grubs to eat. Their camp had two tents and a little camp fire. Batinaghoa called the children for dinner. Fregoma asked if they could spear a kangaroo the next day? No, you are too young and might spear each other? Batinaghoa strictly said. The other elders nodded.
The next day the children got up early and thought of a cunning plan. Fregoma crept past the Elder’s big snores and to the shed, full of spears. He grabbed a couple of spears and crept back to their tent. The others had done their jobs. Lendora’s job was to block the Elder’s ears with gum leaves so they couldn’t hear anything. Rontelo’s job was to pack a basket of food and drinks. They headed for the waterhole. They
saw hundreds of animals drinking the water.
“This is our chance” whispered Lendora cheekily.
“We can grab a spear each and hide behind a tree, to get ready” All the children got behind a tree each, to get ready. Not seeing a snake slithering past them.
“I’ll spear first”. whispered Fregoma. Fregoma threw his spear, but Rontelo didn’t hear his brother and speared at the same time! The two spears flewdirectly at the snake. The snakesaw the spears and pocked his
tongue out. The spears closed together right in the middle of the tongue. It started bleeding like crazy! The children started arguing about whose fault it was.
Meanwhile the elders had woken up and were wondering where the children were. Batinaghoa looked in the shed and saw that three spears were missing! He knew where they had gone.
Back at the waterhole the snake was fixing his tongue with tree sap. The children were running home with two spears missing. The elders were very angry and the children promised they would never do it again. So now these days snake have forked tongues.
THE END
